Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia Receives $10M Gift to Support Mission

RICHMOND (December 15, 2020) – Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia (Goodwill), a nonprofit organization with a mission to help people help themselves through the power of work, is the recipient of a $10 million grant generously provided by MacKenzie Scott. The gift will help fund Goodwill’s mission-driven services.

“We are extremely grateful for this extraordinary gift,” Goodwill Board Chair Maria P. Rasmussen said. “Our mission is simple – “Changing lives, helping people (particularly the underserved populations) help themselves through the power of work.” So many in the public know of our retail stores, but are not aware of all that we do. This gift will enhance our visibility and create new opportunities to do more for underserved populations.”

Goodwill provides job-readiness skills and paid on-the-job training to individuals in Central and Coastal Virginia through a variety of programs designed to make individuals career ready. As a driving force in workforce development, Goodwill works with community partners to meet job seekers where they are, and helps individuals create pathways to long-term career success. With many currently facing unemployment in Virginia, Goodwill’s programs can be a useful tool for anyone seeking employment post-pandemic.

“We are very grateful for this extraordinarily generous gift at a critical point in time when people need jobs,” Goodwill CEO Mark Barth said. “With an established track record of providing workforce development services to the community, Goodwill works with jobseekers to provide training and skills they need to work within the organization or to move on to other employment opportunities.”

“I am personally so proud of all our employees who work so hard and diligently to support Goodwill’s mission,” Rasmussen added. “This gift is recognition of all that they do.”
