The Goodwill Opportunity Fair with VDSS: A New Approach to Employment and Empowerment
April 22, 2025On March 26, 2025, Goodwill hosted a job fair at the Richmond Support Center at 6301 Midlothian Turnpike. Although the organization has held many job fairs over the years, this event stood out. Thanks to a partnership with VDSS Family Engagement Services, the event took on a new and innovative format. Together, the organizations created an experience that highlighted not just employment opportunities, but the full range of services and supports available to Goodwill associates.
The timing of the event was chosen intentionally to give job seekers a chance to see the Goodwill Academy of Virginia leadership training institute in action. Goodwill Case Managers led attendees through a guided “walk and talk” experience that has come to be known as the Goodwill Opportunity Fair. Job seekers and VDSS staff were taken on an informative tour of the support center, where they visited different work areas and learned about various positions. Along the way, they heard about Goodwill’s history, operations, mission, and the benefits and services offered to associates.
A Closer Look at Goodwill Academy
One of the highlights of the tour included a visit to the Goodwill Academy, where attendees learned about the three institutes that make up the Academy and even stepped briefly into a live leadership training class. It was a powerful way to demonstrate how Goodwill invests in the personal and professional growth of its associates.
From Application to Opportunity
The event wrapped up with job seekers being invited to apply for current openings. On-site support was available to help with the application process, including immediate screenings. As part of the experience, attendees also had conversations with Career Advisors and Case Managers to better understand the wraparound supports available to them. These services are designed to help associates achieve stability and grow both personally and professionally.
Many attendees left with interviews scheduled for the following days, and several received job offers. It was an inspiring day filled with real opportunity.
