Overcoming Disability Barrier to Regain Employment

I gained employment with Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia in October 2015. With a profound hearing disability from birth, I was hired under an “AbilityOne” program, designed to provide people with disabilities an opportunity to gain employment with the Federal Government and Department. I started as a driver, delivering and picking up materials to our customers. In 2017, I was promoted to a Warehouse Specialist. The following year, I was once again promoted to the position of Supply Technician, leading the Receiving floor.
Before joining Goodwill, I had years of experience with a great work history. I had learned the value of maintaining good relationships with co-workers and the importance of excellent customer service. I was happy with my employment and my employer was happy with me. However, due to my inability to pass a hearing exam that was added to the company annual health review, I was immediately terminated. For a period of time I found myself unemployed and unable to provide for my family. It became necessary to receive Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) so we could keep our home and provide enough food for our family.
I’m beyond thankful that Goodwill gave me an opportunity to be a part of this great company. To serve the Federal Government and Department of Defense in the Charleston, South Carolina area is truly an honor for me. Goodwill’s mission statement: “Our business is changing lives… helping people help themselves through the power of work”. I completely believe that, and it is changing my life; fulfilling my dream and allowing me to help others…
I love spending time with my wife Jenny, our sons, Jackson and Jesse. I love to be outdoors – camping, fishing, hunting, and being around others having a blast.
