Goodwill Announces Wage Increases and New Flexible Schedule Options Amid COVID-19

Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia is now hiring for multiple positions at its retail locations. Goodwill has also announced a wage increase and flexible schedule options for associates as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are focused on building a culture of learning and development while helping employers across industries enlarge their local labor pool and diversify talent,” Goodwill Vice President of Workforce Development Mark Heinlein (bio) said.  “Our training helps retail workers increase mobility, either by transitioning to a management role at Goodwill or by using their training as a steppingstone to advance career pathways in growing local industries.”

As employees navigate this unique environment amid COVID-19, Goodwill has announced an increase in its starting wages for all entry-level positions to $11 an hour and $13 an hour for all lead positions starting in October. The nonprofit has also added expanded shifts for production and cleaning with more flexible retail schedules within its stores to help parents with students in school virtually, in-person or even in hybrid models. To accommodate associate feedback, safety and sanitation in addition to changing customer shopping patterns, Goodwill retail stores are now closed on Sunday and open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“Our hope is that the starting wage increase for these roles in our organization will help the immediate need for more associates as COVID-19, along with the recent closure of our retail locations for more than 60 days this spring, has impacted the lives of so many on our team,” Heinlein stated.

Retail is the largest operation in the Goodwill workforce. With 35 locations across the Richmond and Hampton Roads region, the retail stores help generate revenue to fund workforce development programs, job readiness training and employment placement services.

“Being a part of the Goodwill team means you are working towards making your community a better place by helping people find jobs and develop a sense of pride and self-esteem,” Heinlein continued.

Goodwill offers competitive pay, paid on-the-job training, retirement compensation, paid time off, a monthly associate shopping discount, opportunities for growth and more. Full-time associates also enjoy a competitive benefits package including health, dental and more. Current open positions include retail, production operations, management positions, organizational support, janitorial, floor tech and more.
