Thrift Your Halloween Costume with Goodwill (and Save Big)

Halloween is right around the corner, and Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia joined RVA Today to share how you can celebrate sustainably and affordably this year. Whether you want something spooky, funny, or totally unique, shopping secondhand at Goodwill helps you create a one of a kind costume while supporting a good cause.

In our RVA Today segment, Laura Faison shared that costumes are more expensive than ever, with the average new costume costing between $40 and $60. Recent data shows Americans are expected to spend about $114 per person on Halloween this year, with costumes accounting for roughly $51 of that. At Goodwill, shoppers can build an entire look with five or six pieces for around $30 or less. Many of those items can be reused, added to your everyday wardrobe, or donated back later.

Choosing to thrift instead of buying new has a big environmental impact. Every year, the United States sends more than 11 million tons of textile waste to landfills, which equals about 81 pounds per person. Globally, the fashion industry generates about 92 million tons of waste each year. Shopping secondhand keeps usable materials in circulation longer and reduces waste. Last year alone, Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia kept more than 40 million pounds of materials out of local landfills through donations and resale.

When you shop or donate at Goodwill, you are doing more than finding a great costume. Every purchase directly funds local job training and career development programs that help people overcome barriers to employment. Your dollars stay right here in the community, creating opportunities for individuals to learn new skills, gain work experience, and build brighter futures.
