As chief operating officer for Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia, Bill Carlson is responsible for developing strategies and leading the operations for donated goods, contract services and facilities management. His role encompasses retail operations for 32 stores; the collection, transportation, resale and processing of 50,000,000 pounds of goods annually; government and business contracts for services such as warehouse, janitorial and mailroom operations; and managing a portfolio of owned and leased real estate space of more than 750,000 square feet.
Carlson joined Goodwill in 2008 as vice president of donated goods, where he oversaw retail store operations, salvage, recycling operations and logistics, and became COO in 2015. He is a champion for Goodwill’s Values-Based Leadership program, helping to solidify a culture centered on the core values of Integrity, Respect, Teamwork, Commitment, Innovation and Learning.
Before joining Goodwill, Carlson spent 30 years in the grocery industry with Ukrop’s Super Markets in Richmond, Va., serving in several senior management positions for a local chain of 30 stores.
He is a Richmond native and a Virginia Tech alumnus. Carlson has been a member of the Rotary Club of Powhatan since 2010 and served as a board member of FeedMore. Bill and his wife, Dona, have two adult daughters. In his free time, Bill enjoys boating, fishing, vegetable gardening, and raising chickens.
