How does Goodwill turn opportunity into real, life‑changing outcomes?
February 24, 2026And what does support look like for someone trying to reenter the workforce after incarceration?
We had the opportunity to show the full impact of that support through the Richmond Reentry Opportunity Fair.
__________
In October 2025, Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia demonstrated this firsthand through the Richmond Reentry Opportunity Fair. Hosted with the Virginia Department of Corrections and the Richmond Parole and Probation Office, the event went beyond hiring to give partners a clear look at the supports available to justice-involved individuals once they are referred to Goodwill.
DOC officers and leaders, including state-level representatives, attended along with staff from the Henrico Department of Social Services. Guests toured the Richmond Support Center, met associates who had entered Goodwill through the same referral pathway and engaged with Case Management, Career Services and the Goodwill Academy of Virginia. They also observed a live Goodwill Academy class, “How to Start a Small Business,” and connected with community agencies serving the reentry population.
While the event expanded partner awareness, it also delivered meaningful impact for job seekers. Of the 33 individuals who attended, 14 received contingent job offers on the spot, with 14 people leaving that day with a fresh start and a clear next step. The success of the fair reinforced the value of showing, not just telling, how Goodwill helps individuals facing barriers gain stability, build confidence and access meaningful employment. By opening our doors to partners, we strengthened relationships and highlighted the “why” behind our mission.
Now that we are in the first quarter of 2026, we are applying what we learned to better support our referral partners and the individuals they serve, ensuring we continue creating real opportunities for those seeking a fresh start.
