Thrifty Essentials for the Perfect Backyard Bash

By Megan Wilson on Jun 14, 2017

Finally! We can welcome summer with open arms and pools. We’re looking for just about any excuse to throw a backyard bash, how about you? It’s time to impress the neighbors, the in-laws, and your gal pals with a fun backyard party. You don’t have to break the bank to do so. We’ve gone hunting at several Goodwill locations around the region and found our favorite essential items to host a laid back pool party or backyard bash.

Serve It Up

Your grandmother’s secret lemonade recipe isn’t anything without something to drink it from! We scouted this pitcher and six-glass set at a Goodwill store. They’re hand painted, yet durable. For under $5, it’s an easy and thrifty party upgrade. These rubber slip ons are an undeniably cute remedy for any splashes that head your way.

These classic drink dispensers are modeled after the mason jar. If you’re creating a shabby chic vibe, then these are the ticket for holding and serving your cocktail creations. Make sure you have a chalk paint pen or raid your children’s chalk collection to create cute labels for your refreshments.

A Party Outfit

We think the best parties are causal ones! Let your guests know ahead of time that you will be wearing a straw hat and your bathing suit so they can dress to match your vibe. You can find sundresses, bathing suits, espadrilles, shorts, and other summer outfit essentials at any Goodwill location. Megan of Sweet Sauce Blog  found this bathing suit, hats and wedges at the West Broad Street Goodwill located at 6202 West Broad Street.

Natural Accents

We hope your backyard party is so fun it lasts from day into night. These floating hibiscus candles will keep your walkways, tables, or even pool lit throughout dusk and into the evening.  Our Goodwill home sections are always flush with candles and lights you can use to create a party atmosphere that lights you up. Share your candle and light finds on Instagram and tag us (@goodwilcvandhr)!

It will feel classic and old fashioned when you use napkin rings during your backyard bash. Roll up enough napkins for your guests and slide on these rustic dragonfly napkin rings for a pop of nature. Drop them all in a large basket for guests to grab on their way through the buffet. Search the home section of your favorite Goodwill and see if you can find more party ready napkin rings!

A Hostess Gift

Never come empty handed to a backyard bash! If you’re playing guest, head to Goodwill to create the perfect gift basket full of quirky summertime items. We filled a woven basket (just $3!) with ceramic red solo cups, a beach ready shovel, grilling supplies, and a funky New Orleans metal art. Throw in some tissue paper or add a bow, and you’re the guest of honor!

If you’re in a rush, search for a one-stop-shop gift for your host or hostess. This Office Vacation in a box will spark a big giggle for the host with a sense of humor. A classic board game or lawn game would also be celebrated gifts if you spy one at Goodwill. You can even brag about the thrift price tag to your boss!

Backup Plan

If it’s really hot outside, you might consider offering guests an insulated cup instead of a glass. Think of them as party gifts! You can find a variety of patterns and colors on the shelves of the home section. Grab a bunch in the same color scheme, but different patterns. The photos will be fun and your guests will remember the backyard bash for a long time as they use the mugs again and again!
