Setting The Record Straight: Debunking False Internet Rumors

By Laura Faison on Nov 16, 2017

When you get the facts, you’ll rest assured knowing your donation supports a worthy cause.

An old email or social media post titled “Think Before You Donate” has circulated for years, making false claims about a number of nonprofits, including Goodwill. We want you to donate with confidence that your gifts are used wisely (after all, we’re all about thrift). Allow us to dispel the rumors and help you be an informed donor.

The email falsely claims that Mark Curran is the president and “owner” of Goodwill. In reality, Goodwill has no owner. Goodwill is a network of 162 autonomous, IRS-designated non-profit organizations governed by local, volunteer Boards of Directors. Goodwill Industries International operates as an association to support the independent Goodwills and is headed by Jim Gibbons, CEO since 2008. Goodwill International is governed by a volunteer board, too.

No one named Mark Curran has ever headed a Goodwill organization. Goodwill Industries of Central and Coastal Virginia is led by President & CEO Charles D. Layman, who has been with Goodwill for 48 years and with our Goodwill for 34 years.

Goodwill ranked #1 in 2016 and 2017 on Enso’s World Value Index — http://enso.co/worldvalue/. We are honored that people recognize Goodwill’s purpose of serving others, and we are grateful for your support.
