David Brown wound up staying in Hampton after a trip from Connecticut to attend his father’s funeral. He settled down with the mother of his two youngest children, but covering the bills wasn’t easy.
“I was getting up at 4:30 or 5:30 in the morning, going to gas stations and hoping I could cut yards or do any kind of day job,” Brown said.
Because his household received state assistance, he was required to do volunteer work in lieu of a job. He was placed at Goodwill.
