DIY Deck, Porch and Patio Ideas!

Our deck when we first bought our house – can you say BORING?

When my husband and I decided it was time to sell our first house and look for a new home, we knew that outdoor living space was on the top of our list of “must haves”.  With a super active little boy, a dog, and a love for grilling and outdoor dining (hello – super convenient with a toddler!), we hoped to find a house that fit the bill.

After a whirlwind selling/buying/closing process we landed the perfect house, complete with deck and expansive front porch.  We quickly realized, however, we had no furniture or décor for either of these spaces!  So began the quest to outfit our deck and porch with everything we needed – while sticking to a pretty tight budget.

We splurged a bit on a great table and chairs for the deck, and this amazing solar LED umbrella which lights up the entire space!

The best advice we received was to spend the bulk of our budget on quality furniture, the kind that could truly withstand our crazy temperature and weather shifts for more than a year or two.   With that in mind, we bought rockers and a rocking bench for the front porch from Cracker Barrel and a great patio set for the deck from, of all places, Kroger!

We’ve been in our house for about a year now, so now it’s time to personalize the space and add some décor.  Our budget is pretty small, so I’ve turned to Pinterest for ideas on how to spruce up these spaces.  In my (ahem) hours of “research”, I’ve stumbled across a ton of great blogs that talked about thrifty deck and porch décor, including The Happy Housie and Frugal Coupon Living.

I’ve picked out a few projects that I want to tackle right away, including this DIY deck rug.  Looks fairly simple, and would add a great pop of color to our otherwise bland deck!  At Christmas I also started embracing pillows in my rocking chairs on the front porch, and I’m currently loving these super easy DIY outdoor pillow covers (so I can use the same pillows, just swap out the colors/fabric!).

Another inexpensive way to spruce up outdoor space is with candles and lighting.  How cute are these DIY lanterns?!  Confession time – I have a slight obsession with all things nautical, and because of that I’m so antsy to create these awesome outdoor lights!

I love how you built your deck. What kind of wood did you use? The little border area at the bottom of the vertical slats is really eye catching. There is so much right there, without anything actually being right there in that space.
