11 Things Every College Woman Should Have In Her Closet

By Laura Faison on Jul 27, 2015

Ladies, you’re starting college or maybe you’ve been in college for a few years but are finally ready to get your wardrobe in order.   You are officially an adult as scary as that may sound and with adulthood comes responsibility – like the responsibility to have clothes in your closet that don’t look like Kendall Jenner took you on a shopping spree.  Styles come and go and you should feel free to express yourself through fashion.  However, there are a few pieces of clothing that every woman should own.

  1. Black or Grey Dress Pants

This should be a given but I don’t mean black dress pants you picked up from Forever 21 that have slits cut out of the side of them.  I mean nice classic dress pants. Something you can throw on when you have a presentation to give in class or an interview for an internship!Natasha1

  1. Pencil Skirt

Again I would stick with a neutral color.  I know that sounds boring and if you find that pencil skirts are your “thing” then by all means get them in every color you desire.  But if you have just one make sure its one that can be mixed and match with a lot of different options.

  1. Shoes – Okay technically this is three items but all are important!

  • Black Pumps: Because they can dress up almost any outfit you have your closet.
  • Ballet Flats: Remember when you were a kid and buying tennis shoes was a must for back to school? Well in the world of womanhood, ballet flats are a must.  Even when wearing a t-shirt and jeans a pair of cute ballet flats immediately dresses up the outfit.
  • Nude Pumps: Why Nude?  Because they go with everything! They can complement your skin tone and make your legs look longer when wearing a dress or skirt.  When black pumps won’t cut it, nude will get the job done.

  1. Blazer

A blazer can add a twist of sophistication to any look.  Pair it with jeans, a skirt, or a dress to create a smart look.

  1. Classic White Button-down Shirt

When you’re not sure what to wear throw on a white button down shirt with any bottom on this list.  Going to meet the new boyfriend’s parents?  A white button down, dark denim, ballet flats, and a statement necklace and you’ll be good to go! Fashionable and sophisticated.

  1. Dark Denim

If you own just one pair of jeans make them dark wash.  They are slimming and can be worn for a much wider range of events than lighter washed versions

  1. A Basic T-shirt

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on a designer t-shirt.  Just make sure you hunt for one that is figure flattering and not one that’s built for a man’s body.  Put this on with a cardigan and a scarf or statement necklace and you’re good to go.

  1. A Striped Shirt

The striped twill shirt is always a classic piece.  Think back to Audrey Hepburn and her striped tee and black ankle pants.  That’s a look that will always be in style.

  1. The Little Black Dress

Nothing is a better blank slate then the LBD.  This dress will be your go to for any last minute occasion that may pop up.  A date, wedding, school presentation, or that sorority event, the LBD will be your best friend.

  1. A Cardigan

Cardigans are a personal weakness.  I own them in every color with every embellishment you could possibly imagine.  When I’m not feeling very imaginative on a Monday morning to head to work I throw on a t-shirt, pair of dress pants and a great cardigan! It can make any basic outfit stand out.

Finally the most important thing you can own is your smile! Nothing beats a confident woman whose personality shines through her smile! It’s the most important thing you should be wearing when you walk out that door.

About our model:

A big thanks to our model, Natasha Winfree.  Natasha is the Training Administrator for Learning and Development at Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia.  She has the best fashion sense and as you can see in the pictures an amazing smile!

About the clothes:

Some of what Natasha modeled is from her closet, some from mine. The best part? We found all of the pieces at Goodwill stores throughout central Virginia and Hampton Roads for a lot less than we would have paid at regular retail.

I discovered Goodwill so many years ago that I can not remember when. 80 % of what I wear comes from the GW Boutique. I get asked ‘where did you get that? I have saved so much over the years. When I get tired of something I just drop it off at the GW boutique to be recycled? PS I was in banking for years
